Even this season, when Montana's Kansas City Chiefs ambushed Young's Niners, the lamentations were heard all over again. Steve Young's road to Miami, where his parents were to meet him last night, has nonetheless been hard. He was a linebacker at Brigham Young in his day, but he knew enough to call a father's audible. Grit wanted Steve to do so very much, but, as he said: "I didn't want to make the decision for him. The upstart and ultimately doomed United States Football League was offering $40 million and the lights of Los Angeles.

When Young finished Brigham Young in 1984, there had also been a crossroads decision that raised the issue of how to achieve the life one seeks. What about the fact that he loved the Bay Area? That he had many friends there? That the 49ers' organization was clearly first-rate? That he had never been much good with life-style change? The father recalled that his son, in response, asked quality-of-life questions. Agent and father believed that Young could scramble forever, but never escape Montana, or Montana's legacy, in San Francisco. That's what Young's agent, Leigh Steinberg, wanted him to do.
It was the specter of Joe Montana, in fact, that made Grit Young encourage Steve to get out of San Francisco several years ago when his previous contract expired.
